Life is Temporary… Enjoy it

As I am sitting here at work today, I am reminded of the ephemeral and fleeting nature of life. I have a unique working situation. I work for a joint venture where one of the founding companies is Korean. Most of the people I work closely with on a daily basis are on 3 to 4-year contracts with the Korean parent company, meaning that they will (rather soon, I might add) eventually return to Korea. I was reflecting upon the bond I have formed with the co-worker I share a desk with and was presented with an emotion of deep sadness.

It is admittedly painful to grapple with the fact that one of your best friends is going to be a world away in a short period of time. It is tempting to say that we’ll keep in touch, but if I am honest with myself (as I should be) as the distance in location grows, we so will the distance between our friendship. We of course will always be friends. We will always be able to look back on those days in that tiny construction trailer sharing meals, jokes, laughter, and tears, but growth lies in recognizing that all of that is temporary. And that is not a bad thing.

Part of the beauty of life is recognizing that everything is temporary, and that by letting go of anxiety, expectations, and worry about the outcome, we can finally sit back and enjoy the experience without fear of it ending. That, my friends, is the key to a beautiful life.
